Advent - Portraits of the Messiah

Manayunk Sermons

God created us to display His beauty. When we turn from that purpose, things get messy. But God sends the Messiah as our Savior, so that through him we can actually display God's beauty. The Savior does this by first rebuilding us, and then rebuilding the world through us.

Resources:

Isaiah 61:1-4

The Prophecy of Isaiah, Alec Motyer

Generous Justice, Timothy Keller

Where is true peace found? Isaiah writes to God's people in exile, with little peace, and presents to them, and to us, an exalted servant. This seemingly unimpressive servant is exalted by bearing our sins and sorrows. True peace is available in him.

Resources:

Isaiah 52:13-53:12

The Prophecy of Isaiah, Alec Motyer

The Logic of Penal Substitution, J.I. Packer

Since the Messiah is Light in the darkness, we have every reason to rejoice, especially in sadness.

When we experience real sadness, the fleeting pleasure of sin and the power of positive thinking fall short of bringing true joy. In this portrait we see that since the Messiah is light, we can have true joy.

Leading up to our celebration of Christ's birth, we are looking at portraits of the Messiah in Isaiah. In this first sermon, we look at the portrait depicting him as Immanuel, God with us, and how that frees us from fear. While there are reasons to fear, God gives us better reasons not to through Immanuel.
