Finding Contentment
In 1 Timothy 6:6-8, the Apostle Paul writes, “But godliness with contentment is great gain, [7] for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. [8] But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. In a parallel passage, Paul writes, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11). Commenting on this verse, the great 17th century puritan pastor Jeremiah Burroughs wrote, “That to be well skilled in the mystery of Christian contentment is the duty, glory and excellence of a Christian.” Our sermon series on contentment is important because contentment is nearly a universal human desire, the duty & glory of the Christian, and incredibly rare in our day.
