Isaiah
All are Welcome in the House of the Lord
From the time of the fall in Genesis 3 through the coming Christ, God’s promises were primarily directed towards and ethnic people, Israel. But, God’s plan was never just to extend his covenant only to Jewish people, his people were always to be a light for the nations. Isaiah 56:1-8 and specifically verses 6-8 show us that the people of God who are welcomed into house of the Lord are not marked by outward appearance but by inward loving obedience.

Set Your Hope on Jesus
As we move from the barren, vast landscape of stumps at the end of Isaiah 10, we find our certain hope in the shoot of Jesse in Isaiah 11. The shoot and root of Jesse, Jesus the Messiah, is our certain hope because he is a better king and has a better kingdom.

Anticipate the Shoot of Jesse
Anticipate the Root of Jesse who is Jesus! We should anticipate his coming because He is righteous and He is our rest.
Wait for the Root of Jesse
That brings us to the big idea of our second Sunday of Advent: Wait for the Root of Jesse. Our big idea raises a fundamental question: why should we wait for the Root of Jesus? What is so glorious about the Root of Jesus that we should embrace lives characterized by waiting for and actively looking to him? Our passage provides us with two reasons: 1. He will judge righteously. 2. He will bring global rest.
For Whom We’re Waiting
We’re all waiting for something in advent, but for what are we waiting? We wait not so much for a what, but a who: The Root of Jesse, who will rule righteously and bring rest.
